TV cooking show host Ms. Deen revealed last week that she has been Type ll diabetic for 3 years and has been keeping the diagnosis under her hat.
Evidently Paula Deen has replaced Julia Child as the ‘queen of butter’. She’s also paying a hefty health price.
Not surprising as a high-fat, high-sugar diet is directly correlated to the development of Type ll diabetes. The combination of a high-fat, high-sugar diet and being overweight are a recipe for T2. When a body is in this state, insulin function is impaired, since with so much fat circulating in the blood stream, as well as on the body, insulin can’t do its job of efficiently moving nutrients into the muscle cells for storage. It’s as if there is a slippery, greasy handle on the door and it can’t find its way in.
But the real shocker is what Ms. Deen is doing with this information. Instead of taking the opportunity to impact public health by providing an education about how to reverse diabetes, which it has been proven repeatedly can be done with a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based vegan diet, she has decided to become the spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, which supplies her diabetes medication.
There is another alternative, Ms. Deen. Says Mike Paul of MGP & Associates PR, a New York-based crisis management firm:
Most people know that a diabetes drug is not the only answer. If Deen is simply going to take the medication but not take steps to change her diet and fitness regimen in a significant way or to advise her fans to do the same, then she risks losing her credibility.
Audiences might start to feel conned, he warned, wondering whether Deen really cares about them, or just their wallets.
But all doesn’t have to be lost, Paul said.
Deen could blow up her butter empire, he suggested, and replace it with a “Southern health food” empire that could make her far more popular.
There’s still hope, but don’t hold your breath – it looks like Ms. Deen is in for more deep fat, and deeper disease. We wouldn’t wish it on anyone, yet perhaps if her diabetes continues to progress, she’ll have a change of heart.
The PCRM Dieticians offer to help Paula Deen fight diabetes with a vegan diet
In an open letter to Ms. Deen, the team at PCRM (Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine) have invited her to change her tactics, from pushing meds to changing her health with diet:
Dear Ms. Deen,
As a registered dietitian focusing on chronic disease prevention, I want to let you know that I’m sorry to hear that you have to deal with the challenges of diabetes, but I want to offer my help—and to invite you to participate in our 21-Day Vegan Kickstart, an online program that has assisted more than 150,000 people in trying a diet that fights diabetes. In contrast to the Paula Deen kerfuffle, Vegan tri-athlete and Brendan Brazier has launched a new plant based meal delivery service, Thrive Foods Direct, for those with active lifestyles and busy schedules and vegan diets.
Thrive Foods Direct prepares all dishes according to the nutritional principals in Brazier’s Thrive Book series. This means that they are:
- organic
- alkaline-forming
- plant-based whole food
Thrive Foods Direct is founded on the principles that a whole foods, vegan diet aids in
- reducing body fat
- better sleep
- lower cholesterol
- reduced risk of disease
- enhanced athletic performance and recovery time
According to Brazier:
This is for people who read my Thrive Diet book who have felt good, gotten results, but perhaps don’t have the time, inclination, or know how to put it all together on a continuous basis, so this allows people to be able to continue eating this way. People would say to me all the time “I’d eat this way all the time if someone cooked for me”, so this is my response.
The program is centered and the food is made in Marina del Ray, California. To find out more about Thrive Foods Direct and learn if there is delivery in your area, go to Thrive Foods Direct.
New video from Farm Sanctuary celebrates 25 years of animal rescue
Perhaps there is no better way to wrap today’s new roundup than with the just-released slide show from Farm Sanctuary in celebration of 25 years of service to our less-fortunate sentient earth fellows, the farm animals. We’ll let the images tell the story.
