2011 was a landmark year for veganism, or more specifically the vegan diet, in the media.
There were lots of newsy breakthroughs, yet these two come to mind most readily.
Top 2 vegan diet news stories for 2011
1) President Clinton goes vegan: Dr. Sanjay Gupta went on a year-long investigation to find out what actions he could take to offset his own family history of heart disease through lifestyle choices. Gupta’s investigation is documented in the now enormously popular video report, “The Last Heart Attack in America”. Included in the video is an interview of President Bill Clinton who talks about his own health improvements and weight loss after he adopted a vegan diet, thanks in part to encouragement from his doctor and his daughter Chelsea.
The video can be seen in its entirety here: Dr. Sanjay Gupta with Bill Clinton: Can the right diet make you heart attack proof? ‘The Last Heart Attack in America’
2) The release of the ground-breaking Forks Over Knives film: This film features several key players in the Plant-Strong Diet force, including Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Rip Esselstyn of Engine 2 Diet fame. You’ll also see Dr. John McDougall, Pam Popper and others.
Forks Over Knives describes in simple terms how changing what you eat can change your life. More about the film, the film’s producer, and a film trailer can be seen on the Plant-strong blog here:

A book to help you find your way:
Not a media event per se, yet well worth mentioning also is the release in 2011 of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition, by Julieanna Hever. You may recognize this from it’s nod on the last-minute-vegan-gift-guide for holiday shoppers.
This is the first book of its kind and details the basics of plant-based nutrition. If you feel like you are shooting in the dark and want some guidance to get you started, this will do it. If you’ve been following a vegan diet, yet have a sneaking suspicion that you aren’t necessarily eating a healthy vegan diet, the Complete Idiot’s Guide will set you straight. Remember, not all vegan diets are created equal when it comes to being healthy.
